You don’t need to learn a system first. Five steps, and the book does the rest.

  1. Write your name in it. Fill in the title page and the owner page: the subject of this volume, your name, your yeshiva, kollel, seminary or shiur.
  2. Open your first entry. On the first writing page, fill in the line at the top: date · makom · source.
  3. Write it short. What you learned or heard, in your own words. Mark a question קשה, an answer וי״ל, your own reasoning נ״ל. Close with העולה.
  4. Add it to the index. Give the masechta or sefer an index page at the back, and write the daf or siman with the page.
  5. On Rosh Chodesh, read back. Copy every open צ״ע to the review page.

It doesn’t matter what your first entry is. A single line from today’s shiur is a good beginning.
