Pinkas Torah

פנקס תורה

One bound book for everything you learn. Every entry keeps its makom and its source, so you can find it again, review it, and build on it for years.

Pinkas Torah

The whole idea

Write as you learn, in one book, in order. Open every entry with the date, the makom and the source. Leave the margin for what you add later. Index by makom at the back. Review every Rosh Chodesh, and carry what is still open into the next volume.

How it came about

The method grew out of our work with rabbanim, bringing their shiurim and handwritten notes into print. The same problems kept coming up: a chiddush without its source, notes where it was unclear who said what, the best additions crowded into the margins. Pinkas Torah gives each of them a place on the page. Read the story.

Why write it down

קבע נא הערותיך בספר מכורך למען תהיינה לך למשמרת וזה חיזוק לעיון
Set your notes down in a bound book, so that they are kept for you; and this strengthens one’s learning.
Chazon Ish, Kovetz Igros I, letter 4
דהרבה זימנין מצוי שאדם שוכח מה שחידש כבר ואינו יכול לחדשו אח״כ
For it often happens that a person forgets what he has already understood, and cannot arrive at it again.
Mishnah Berurah 545:47 (the Chofetz Chaim)

More sources, each checked against the printed text: The Tradition.

For everyone who learns
